I get by with a little help from my friends

I used to be in a running group. These ladies got me off my butt and out of bed at 5:30 every morning for 4 months. I know, it's hard to believe. My husband thought he had entered an alternate universe.

One of the women in the group had a baby the day after I did, and is still running. Yes, she totally makes me look like the slacker that I am.

I finally met her baby the other day, and we were, of course, comparing milestones, etc, as new mothers do. She mentioned that she had her baby out of town, because of some high risk issues. I mentioned that I had to do the same. She politely asked what my issues were, and I told her, "I have PKD. Polycystic Kidney Disease."

She cocked her head and said, "Oh, do you!"

Hmm. Not the usual polite that-sounds-bad-but-I-don't-know-what-to-say-and-I'm-kind- of-glad-it's-not-me look I usually get.

"You know about PKD?" I asked her.

"Yes. I'm a dietician, and I worked at a dialysis center for years."

I suddenly felt like I had an ally. A person who knew. A woman on the inside.

So, to recap, this woman runs, has a baby THE EXACT SAME AGE as my daughter, knows all about dietary issues involved with PKD, and, in one of those "Holy Hannah it's a small world" moments, we discovered that her husband even used to date my best friend in high school.

See? Loads in common. If the topic of PKD can't sustain us, the gossip about her husband and my friend can provide hours of entertaining conversation.

I want her to be my new best friend. I wonder if I could pay her to do it.

That's incredibly awesome! I don't even know off-line people that have ever had dealings with people with any kind of kidney issues.

You gotta hang out with more sick people, Rob. And more dieticians, too.
