Cycles

I feel like garbage today.  I know why, though.

Last night was a bad kidney night.  Lots of pain, especially in my left kidney, that was sharper than it normally is.  It kept me awake, so I stayed up way too late watching "Once Upon a Time" on Netflix (which is officially my new favorite show. It's like a clean "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" with dwarves.)

Also, last evening was one of those rare evenings where we didn't eat dinner together as a family.  That's one thing that I try really hard to do, but this week, my husband has to teach a class that goes until 6:00, putting him home at 6:15, and last night I had to be someplace at 6:45.  My son had Tae Kwon Do until 6:30, and I had to leave at 6:25.

If you didn't follow that schedule, basically it means I had enough time to make dinner, kiss my husband when he got home, point to the chicken and rice, remind him he had to pick up my son, and leave before my son got home.

Which means that I forgot to actually eat the dinner I made.

This goes back to my wonky appetite issues, and I honestly didn't realize I hadn't eaten dinner until about 1am, when I was still awake watching the evil queen corner Rumpelstiltskin.  But what do you do at 1am when you're hungry?  Usually, I just ignore the hunger and tell myself that I will eat in the morning.

Well, morning came, I got up with my kids to help get them out the door for school.  We aren't big breakfast eaters around here, so my kids usually get by with some cinnamon toast and some OJ or milk. My kidneys were hurting again, so much so that I skipped my morning run and went back to bed.  I feel asleep almost immediately.

I also skipped breakfast.  Because with the pain, I kinda forgot I was hungry.

So now it's almost noon, because I was so tired I slept for over 2 hours.  I haven't eaten anything decent in probably close to 24 hours.  I'm feeling weak, lightheaded, and my kidneys still hurt.

I need a cook.

Pain can get bad... I know it. I also suffer from pain on my left kidney. There is a specific cyst that rubs against the bottom of my ribs. I hate it!!! I do spend my nights turning from side to side. My kidneys are huge and the pressure causes pain which disturbs a peaceful sleep.
I do not forget to eat though. Due to kidney size, I do best with small snacks/meals throughout the day. Try having veggies already washed and cut in the fridge. A piece of fruit is always good and easy to digest. Remember your H20. Feel better soon!
Best,
Karin

Do you have pain medication? This would help out. I have PKD and my left kidney causes me pain too. I take half a Vicodin tablet twice a day and this helps keep my pain away.

Hi, I just found your blog today. I got diagnosed with PKD in 1992. I feel your pain! My right kidney is my evil one:) My nephrologist told me I shouldn't run because is it can increase pain and also causes the cysts to grind against the good kidney tissue damaging them. He told me to exercise in non-impact ways (like walking, swimming, I like my elliptical).
I can't say that this is true, but it does make sense. I live in Utah. We seem to have a large population of PKD patients. I look forward to reading more of your blog.
